    Background:

There have been many discoveries of Near Earth Objects (NEOs, such as comets and asteroids) by citizen astronomers across the world who have observed them using widely-available telescopes. NASA, and the greater international space community, receive a number of reported new objects each and every day. By leveraging the citizen astronomy community to centrally report and help vet these observations, scientists would be able to more effectively research and track Near Earth Objects.

NASA has a history of using crowdsourced methods like this to help filter our scientific discoveries. Projects such as Galaxyzoo, Moonzoo, Planet Hunters, and Planet Four, people around the world have helped NASA discover new planets, map the surface of the moon, and study wind patterns on Mars.

    Challenge Description:

Create an app or web-based platform that enables citizen astronomers to register, submit findings, and help rank the findings of other citizen astronomers. Findings that receive many positive rankings will be listed on a “potential candidates” list for new discoveries.

    Functional Specifications:

Wherever possible, the tool should intergrate with existing resources, such as the Minor Planet Center, which offers tracking of potential canidates.

The proposed system ought use the existing data fields, such as NEO Desireability Score, discovery date, rough current position and magnitude, number of observations, arc, nominal H, observation notes, and image. You can learn more about these feilds at the Minor Planet Center resources below.
